As a rule, we tend to steer clear of new releases here at Beyond The Box Set. It’s not set in stone, but we generally find that movies suit our format better when they’ve had at least a year or so to settle.
That being said, thanks to our ritual of ending each of our recording sessions with a trip to the cinema, we have seen a lot of new movies in 2017. Forty-four in total, with our dedication to hurling money at our local Multiplex exposing us to everything from franchise blockbusters to future cult classics to near-instantly forgotten obscurities.
With the end of the year in sight, we thought it might be fun to put our own spin on the ‘Year End Special’ podcast format by not just revisiting the films we caught at the cinema, but also pitching quickfire, off-the-cuff sequel ideas for all of them.
In the first half of this week’s two-part special, we reminisce about the movies we caught between January and June of 2017. The first couple of months are naturally dominated by this year’s major Oscar contenders, plus a handful of landfill blockbusters gracelessly shoved into the January to April wasteland in a bid to extract some cash before the serious summer blockbusters started to hit the market around May to June.
Join us as we imagine sequels to some films that really don’t warrant any, struggle manfully to remember the plots to some of the more forgettable franchise extensions of the year and celebrate a few of the unsung gems of the first half of the year. Needless to say, spoilers abound throughout, but we’ll give plenty of fair warning if there’s anything you haven’t gotten around to yet.
