Well, this was a surprising treat. A campy revenge comedy based on the bestselling novel by Rosalie Hamm, The Dressmaker flew under the radar when it was released in 2015 – with the exception of Australia, where it became an unlikely Box Office smash. But this film is the definition of a hidden gem, featuring an unpredictable plot, deliciously quotable dialogue and weapons-grade scenery chewing from stars including Kate Winslet, Judy Davis, Liam Hemsworth and Liam Hemsworth’s abs.

Winslet stars in The Dressmaker as Tilly Dunnage, a glamorous woman of indeterminate age who returns to her home town in rural Australia to confront a traumatic childhood incident in which she was accused of murdering a local boy. Her preferred method of working through her issues is, naturally enough, to set up as a local dressmaker and give the women of the town fabulous makeovers. She also falls in love with Liam Hemsworth, who is apparently supposed to be around the same age as her.

As the truth about Tilly’s childhood comes to light, the town becomes embroiled in forgotten secrets, simmering resentments, low level drug dealing and murder. Oh, and there’s also a supporting turn from Hugo Weaving as a kindly police officer with a fetish for fabric. It is, quite frankly, a hoot.
