Despite a plot so needlessly complicated that Ellen Page’s role basically consisted of stopping the action every twenty minutes to ask one of the other characters what exactly was going on, Christopher Nolan’s Inception is one of the most successful action-thrillers of all time.
Essentially the La La Land of its day, only with fewer songs and far more likeable protagonists, back in Summer of 2010 you’d either already seen Inception, or you were pretending you’d already seen it. To have no opinion on its mind-bending concept or that ending was simply not an option.
Strangely enough, despite picking up eight Academy Awards and grossing just shy of $300 million at the US Box Office, the cast and creators of Inception have proven admirably resistant to revisiting the story. In some respects this is pretty admirable – the end of the film achieves the rare balancing act of satisfactorily resolving the central plot and leaving the audience on a cliffhanger.
On the other hand, the near limitless storytelling potential of a world of dream-building and mind exploration seems like a terrible thing to waste…
