OSCARS | The 2019 Best Picture Nominees, Ranked

Oscars | Best Picture 2019 | Ranked

Listen to our Oscars 2019 Best Picture Ranking episode on:

Cancelled hosts, disgraced directors, the constant will-they, won’t-they about awarding some of the technical awards offscreen (turns out they’ll now all be presented live) – it’s certainly been a controversial year for the Academy Awards. As the ceremony finally approaches, it’s time for our annual rundown of the movies which earned the 2019 Oscar nomination for Best Picture.

We have an unusually short list this year, with a mere eight movies making the final cut from a category maximum of ten. There’ve been some controversial omissions – Can You Ever Forgive Me, If Beale Street Could Talk, Widows etc. – and several of the nominated movies have sharply divided opinion among critics and fans. But of course, the only opinion that truly matters is ours.

In alphabetical order, here are the eight nominated film we’re discussing in this special bonus episode:

  • Black Panther
  • BlacKkKlansman
  • Bohemian Rhapsody
  • The Favourite
  • Green Book
  • Roma
  • A Star Is Born
  • Vice

Having watched all of the movies, we each individually ranked them from worst to first before comparing our rundowns on this podcast. As usual, we have some points of agreement, and some big differences of opinion. Tune in to discover which film we both ranked dead last on our list, which controversial crowd-pleaser made only one of our top 3’s, and which two films we both agreed deserved to be neck and neck in the race for Oscar Gold.

We also take a quick look through the other categories and pick out our winners in everything from Acting and Direction to Sound Editing and Production Design – which we definitely completely understand and feel justified in commenting on. Whether you agree with our opinions or not, we’d love to hear your thoughts, so please leave a comment with your own rankings or get in touch with us via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

If you’d like to hear our expanded thoughts on these and many other movies, we’ve recorded full-length reviews for all of them on our bonus show Beyond BTBS, available exclusively on Patreon. You can access this show by signing up to our VIP Listeners Club for as little as $2 per month.

Until next time, enjoy the show and may the best film win!
