OSCAR BONUS | Ranking the 2018 Best Picture Nominees
Listen to our Oscar Best Picture Ranking episode on:
It’s time for another temporary detour into Oscar Season. With the Academy Awards set to take place on Sunday 4th March, we’ve spent the past six weeks or so burning through the nominated films. Now we’re ready to deliver our definitive Best Picture Oscar Rankings.
Even if the end result is unlikely to match last year’s envelope-gate for high drama, it’s safe to say that it’s been an interesting year for the Academy Awards. There’s no runaway favourite in the La La Land vein this year – at time of writing Shape of Water, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Get Out, Lady Bird and Dunkirk could all conceivably walk away with the big prize – and should all be in with a strong chance of picking up a gong or two in the other categories. Plus there’s nothing as laughably awful as Hacksaw Ridge in the mix this year, so that’s a plus…
In this week’s episode, we individually rank the Best Picture winners from worst to best and compare our findings. We then go through the other categories and make our predictions and personal preferential winners for each. We’ll be revisiting all of this in our post-Oscars reaction episode, which we’re hoping to have out by Monday 5th.
Last but not least, we come up with a few of our own award nominations – featuring the categories that really matter, such as Hottest Sex Scene, Achievement in Scenery Chewing and Wig of the Year.
The movies nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture at this year’s Oscars are…
- Call Me By Your Name (Luca Guadagnino)
- Darkest Hour (Joe Wright)
- Dunkirk (Christopher Nolan)
- Get Out (Jordan Peele)
- Lady Bird (Greta Gerwig)
- Phantom Thread (Paul Thomas Anderson)
- The Post (Stephen Spielberg)
- The Shape of Water (Guillermo Del Toro)
- Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (Martin McDonagh)
We’ll be back on Friday with a return to our regularly scheduled programming – covering one of last year’s big Oscar darlings. Keep an eye out for our hung over Oscar reaction episode too, which should be appearing sometime on Monday, depending how we feel.
You can also hear full mini-reviews of all of this year’s Best Picture nominees by becoming a Beyond The Box Set supporter on Patreon, where we offer a host of incentives including access to our bonus review show, a 30 second ad slot and the opportunity to become a character in one of our sequels, all for the low low price of… whatever you feel like contributing!
Until next time, happy Oscar season!
